Our Story

We are thrilled to announce the 11th Annual McKenna’s Wishes Toy Drive, which will benefit the Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Toledo and help brighten the lives of children this holiday season and throughout the year!

What began in 2015 in my AP Psychology classroom, with the hope of giving a child joy through a toy or stuffed animal, has grown beyond what I ever imagined. That very first year, we collected 1,500 toys. Since then, with the generosity of our community, we’ve expanded regionally and donated over 55,000 toys and nearly $15,000 in just 10 years.

Every child from newborn to 18 years old receives a “toy” when admitted, undergoing scans or testing, or visiting the emergency room. These gifts help calm fears, ease anxieties, and bring smiles during some of their toughest moments. While the holidays are a special time, our goal is to keep the hospitals’ Treasure Chests full year-round.

Together, we can continue spreading joy, comfort, and hope—one toy at a time.

🎁 This year’s toy delivery will take place on December 17, 2025!

“This teddy bear that my 6 month old daughter received before going under anesthesia put the biggest smile on her face warmed my heart.  We then received several more items when she went into the hospital a month later with pneumonia. Not only does it bring comfort to the child, but more importantly  to the parents.”

"My son had an emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix and ileocecectomy at the beginning of the school year.  The child life department at Toledo Children's Hospital was incredible and made our 7-day hospital stay bearable.  They provided toys, stuffies, games, puzzles, etc. for my son to play with and support during every tough procedure.  Of course, I thought of your psychology class and felt proud to work for Springfield, knowing that many of the toys were likely donated by Springfield students and families."
